The secret of the beads

Four sentences that serve as a method.

I have no manifesto. I have a few sentences that have stayed with me for a long time, and that say more about the way I work than any technical description could.

“Living is victory.” That one comes first, and it explains the rest. When you create by hand, bead after bead, you learn to count in hours rather than in gestures. Every finished piece is a small victory, and there is no shortcut.

“Travelling is the richness of life.” I bring no objects back from my travels. I bring back colours, shapes and lights, and that is the only luggage that never wears out.

The trinity: health, time, energy. You need all three together to work this way. If one of the three is missing, the piece waits. That is also why I never promise a deadline I could not keep.

The promise, the secret of the beads. A bead, taken on its own, is almost nothing. A seed of glass. What makes it precious is what you promise it, by joining it to thousands of others. My work is to keep that promise, one bead after another.

My art is a kind of therapy.

Board of nine travel photographs: encounters in Kenya, a shell, a heart-shaped leaf, a piece of coral, a wall covered in coloured glass marbles and fields of tulips.
Board of fifteen travel photographs: shorelines, fields of pink and yellow tulips, Dutch windmills, a magnolia flower and a castle by the water.
